If you have never heard of Rescue Remedy or Bach Flowers, please visit this website
http://www.bachflower.com/
We began using the Rescue Remedy for behavior problems or anticipating anxiety type situations and it works wonderful for both kids....AND MOM!!
Later we also visited our Homeopathic doctor and after taking a "bach" quiz, determined which specific Bach flower each of us needed the most and she gave us specific remedies just for us. They are amazing.
I keep a bottle of Rescue Remedy in my purse, and each level of the house. You never know when you might need it. I've also been known to give out the bottle in my purse to a friend at playdate or the park who is having trouble with a kid that day or week.

Feingold - Salicylates
For those of you with kids on the Feingold and have to also watch your salicylate intake, we know what you are going through. We still avoid all the basics on
Feingold - High Fructose Corn Syrup, Dyes, Preservatives, Nitrates, Artificial Flavors. Now, though my son can tolerate most regular foods with salicylates because we give him the new enzyme from Enzymedica - CarbGest. It happened immediately and works great.
If you are still having trouble, peel all your fruit and veggies (that you can), the peeling contains real enzymes that seem to cause extra trouble in sensitive kids. Also, you can find lists online (just google salicylates) to find which foods are highest - like almonds, honey, grapes, raisens, etc.
Remember also, that if you take a food allergy test, the salicylate sensitivity will NOT show up, you have to do it as a process of elimination. Unfortunately, that's the only legitimate way to check. But when you find the salicylate lists online, test the mild foods first and work your way up to medium and severe. (Or for a more peaceful house, don't try severe at all)

New test results
In January this year we received our test results back for our son from the NutraEval test that was blood/urine test to check amino acid, mineral, metals, neutransmitters and much more that I don't even understand. After that test, we adjusted some levels of things and added in the B6 and B12, more Cod Liver Oil, more calcium, Evening Primrose Oil, more vitamin D and CoQ10. It also showed on the test "looked" like a child who was smack dab in the middle of the Autistic spectrum (according to the doctor). We have been so fortunate that we started the diet (GFCF, Feingold) and enzymes and probiotics when we did. We also stopped immunizations and try desparately to avoid all the toxins we can in our enviroment.
Just a few weeks ago, we received a GI stool test back and found out some more interesting information. Our son had 3 parasites and some other gastrointestinal distress most likely caused by yeast (Candida).
Our daughter also had the GI stool test taken. We have struggled for years with her bloating, gas, sleep problems, and low blood sugar episodes. Finally, after getting the results from this test, everything became clearer. She is allergic to wheat/corn/potatoes and has been on enzymes/probiotic for years also, but we've had to change them periodically because they seem to "stop working". We added in Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) recently and that helped some and took beans out of her diet and got a little relief but not enough. A 3 year old with a stomach ache who loses about 2-3 hours sleep a day starts to become quite a hard thing to deal with after a few days, let alone a few weeks or months.
The test revealed that she had Heliocobactor Pylori bacteria in her stomach and 2 parasites in her gut. She also had yeast overgrowth. The H.Pylori is the bugger responsible for creating ulcers and apparently infects about half the world. Because she has low stomach acid, it was really doing some serious business in her stomach and causing problems in digestion and in her gut. We started a combo product that has Mastic Gum and some other things in it and are already seeing results. Wow!!!

September 2009 update
Well, its been a fast spring and summer and here comes the fall. Our progress this year has been remarkable. Asher is now completely on a gluten free casein free diet and still fully on Feingold. The diet and cooking has been tricky but we've seen less "eggshell" days and unexplainable rage, whining, and flatout meanness. We also went to see a DAN doctor in Kansas City to help us continue down the right road. Per his suggestions, we've added in a multivitamin, 500 mg of calcium daily, liquid B6, and Cod Liver Oil.
We think a combination of the Cod Liver Oil (helped his allergies) and the calcium have finally helped him sleep through the night again. I also outsmarted myself and switched his 100 mg of Magnesium to evening instead of morning. I orginally administered it in the morning to keep him calmer during the day, but the diet really helped that. Giving it at night is helping him wind down and settle down to sleep better.
We also just ordered a blood test for food allergies to see if there is anything that we are missing from Alcat Labortories. Then we're going to do the Nutreval from Genova Diagnostics to see what else is going on in that little body that could help him. After all of that we plan to do a oral Chelation therapy with this doctor in Kansas City because somehow the genetics in my mom's side of the family really hangs on to metals. I will probably do this with him since I have toxic mercury and cadmium in my body too.
Our daughter Giya is doing much better since we discovered she was allergic to wheat and corn. It was really messing up her bowels and her sleep patterns. Every now and then she cycles through a bit of it again, and I just give her an extra Allerase enzyme once or twice a day with an extra probiotic and within a few days, she is back to normal sleeping patterns again. We're not sure what messes it up now, but she has still been getting teeth this year and that could be it. We'll know soon enough, since her last two molars are coming in now.
She also shows more of a tendency for low blood sugar like I had as a kid. We started giving her the Reduce Enzyme from Enzymedica and it has REALLY helped the meltdowns that were happening before meals. They have all but disappeared.
We are so blessed to have a community of people that God has brought to us to help guide us on this journey.

Neurotransmitters
Our latest endeavor with our son, has us peeling back another layer of his onion story. For those of you who have special needs kids, or kids with ADHD or on the autistic spectrum this could help you tremendously. Do your research and go to the right specialist or doctor to help you pinpoint this.
Dr. Jonathan Wright an MD in California (http://www.wrightnewsletter.com/) published an article last year that my dad read about ADHD and other neurological disorders linked to gut problems. He found that most kids with these problems have trouble with one or more of their neurotransmitters. I dont' think I could do justice to explain what they do in the body, but they communicate with the hormones that tell the nerves that tell the digestion that tell the nerves that tell the brain....well, you get the picture. Its complicated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurotransmitter
You have, however heard of some of them - dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT), melatonin, histamine Amino acids: glutamate, gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), aspartate, glycine and many more. I had read studies that showed some spectrum kids needed glutamate supplements and their symptoms all but disappeared. We had my son tested and he was not short in this neurotransmitter, but we didn't know to check all of them. We finally did. My dad convinced me to and we went to our kinesiologist doctor to find out that our son is low in dopamine.
We began our dopamine supplements about 10 days ago - using a product called L-Dopa, it contains velvet bean, or mecuna extract. We give him 1/2 capsule daily.
Within 2 days, we have a new little boy. We thought all the other layers of the onion we had peeled back were extraordinary, but here is a list of the things that have disappeared:
1. no longer has issues with socks - can wear them inside out, right side out and different kinds
2. no longer has issues with the seatbelt in car
3. eats raw vegetables ravenously
4. wakes up happy in the morning, not groggy or whiney, or resistant to anything
5. has so much more positive energy that he has almost stopped taking naps in the afternoon
6. obeys and functions within the perameters and rules of the house SOOOO much better
7. sings all the time
8. tells jokes and funny stories more often
9. encourages his sister and plays together with her without fighting, and freaking out when she touches his stuff
10. is constantly hugging me and saying "i love you mom"
11. finally got over his "not wanting to be near daddy thing" and cuddles him and loves on him all the time as if he always has
Please do your research and go the right doctors to find out, but with all the studies out there and our experience, I completely believe that spectrum kids must have different issues with various neurotransmitters, hence the large spectrum of behaviors and issues they have.

Bella donna
Our homeopathic doctor gave us a remedy for fevers with bella donna in it......it is amazing. I always have had trouble with fevers because my son has such bad reactions to the artificial flavor and the preservatives in products like dye free Motrin and Tylenol. Having this remedy in the house during this winter helped tremendously. You can search online and probably find some form of it at your local health food store.
Getting sick this winter MUCH BETTER
I have to admit, that all this trouble with alternative medications, enzyme therapy and probiotics can be taxing at times, but let me tell you the benefits after getting through (almost) cold and flu season this winter. Giya got sick in October - she threw up once, never ran a fever and had decreased appetite for about 2 days. That was it. Asher got sick twice where he ran a fever on and off for 1 to 2 days and had decreased appetite. That was it. The latest round actually hit us all after Christmas and the travelling where we got the sinus cold. We have seemed to fight it off faster than most people we know and only had the wake up at night with stuffy nose problem and some whining during the day. Honestly, it still wasn't fun because when they are really sick they cuddle, sleep alot and watch TV. Not this year, being almost or half sick keeps them going and just causes the whining.
We used extra enzymes and probiotics at night (we would give them a dose at bed and then again when we went to bed). They work better on an empty stomach if you are trying to clean out the intestines (where most sickness battles are fought) and boost the immune system. We did finally go to our homeopathic doctor to get a viral/sinus remedy to clear out the passages better because it is harder to squirt saline in their noses as they get older. That sure did help them sleep at night.
